Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale casting news is starting to trickle out to the public. The series itself is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s feminist dystopian masterpiece. Now we have been told that Yvonne Strahovski will have the leading role of Serena Joy, Commander Waterford’s wife.
Once a televangelist, now Serena Joy controls her household staff and has to tolerate Offred (Elizabeth Moss), who is the handmaiden assigned to deliver a child for her. If you are familiar with the novel, you already know why this is such a contentious relationship and even without the read, you can likely guess.
< Strahovski would seem to be a strange casting choice because in the book, Serena Joy and the Commander are middle-aged, if not even older. Joseph Fiennes, cast as the Commander, is just 46, while Strahovski is 34, far from middle age. However, a younger Serena presents a possible provoking twist.
